Demand Marijuana Justice in the Senate

The House has passed the MORE Act for the second time, a bill that would end federal marijuana prohibition while repairing its harms and prioritizing equity and social justice. Despite this and the vast majority of the public in favor of federal reform, the Senate has not yet advanced legislation.

With hundreds of thousands of arrests for marijuana every year that unfairly punish Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and low-income communities, the Senate must not delay overdue justice any longer. Tell your Senators to move marijuana justice reform forward as soon as possible.

As a constituent, I urge you to support federal marijuana reform in the Senate and move legislation forward as soon as possible. An overwhelming 91% of U.S. adults say that marijuana should be legal for recreational or medical use. Despite the popularity of marijuana across the country, there are hundreds of thousands of marijuana arrests in the U.S. every year.

The Senate should pass a bill similar to the MORE Act, which was just passed for the second time in the House. It has the comprehensive reforms we urgently need for a new path forward. It would end the federal criminalization of marijuana and align the public’s view with federal law, while allowing individual states to decide the course they want to take on marijuana. It would declassify marijuana as a controlled substance under federal law, expunge marijuana convictions, and reduce marijuana sentences. It would use marijuana tax revenue to fund services in communities adversely impacted by drug prohibition and to build up programming to support a more diverse and inclusive legal marketplace. And it would allow banking services for marijuana businesses with fair opportunities for small businesses in the most harmed communities.

I hope the Senate will follow the House’s lead as soon as possible by passing legislation that will finally end federal marijuana prohibition and repair the harms it’s causing to our communities. It’s beyond time for federal marijuana reform. Thank you.
