End police militarization fueled by the drug war

The war on drugs has fueled violent policing practices that have contributed to the police killings of Breonna Taylor and too many others.

Please support and cosponsor the Demilitarizing Local Law Enforcement Act of 2021, the bill that would abolish the 1033 program. The 1033 program funds the transfer of military equipment to law enforcement in pursuit of waging the drug war. It allows for training police-like armies and turning our communities into war zones, and it drives violence and killings by law enforcement.

The 1033 program has been a primary driver of the police militarization that has contributed to the police killings of Breonna Taylor and too many others.

Billions of dollars worth of property has been transferred to law enforcement agencies equipping them with battering rams, specialized firearms and large caliber weapons, armored vehicles, helicopters, and more.

This equipment is used in day-to-day operations and especially in conducting SWAT raids. Most of these raids are carried out as part of drug investigations like the one that killed Breonna Taylor, and disproportionately target Black and Latinx people.

Now is the time for Congress to pass meaningful legislation to protect communities from the systemic perils of over-policing, police brutality, misconduct, and harassment, and end the impunity with which officers operate in taking the lives of so many people. I urge you to support the Demilitarizing Local Law Enforcement Act of 2021 and abolish the 1033 program.
