Attorney General Jeff Sessions has resigned at President Trump’s request after less than two years in office. While Trump’s dismissal of Sessions raises questions about the president’s motivations, the Justice Department and Senate should seize this opportunity to right Sessions’ wrongs.
Sessions pursued an aggressive agenda to escalate the war on drugs. He ramped up sentencing for drug offenses, restarted destructive asset forfeiture practices, and threatened crackdowns on marijuana legalization and supervised consumption services.
You and the vast majority of the public knows the drug war has failed. With Sessions gone, it’s time to tell your Senators to ensure the next attorney general will move away from failed drug war policies and defend basic rights.
