Congress: Stand Against Unprecedented Power for Sessions
Congress is currently negotiating a package of bills to address the overdose crisis. Unfortunately, they could make the crisis even worse by including legislation that would give the DEA and Attorney General Sessions unprecedented new powers to ramp up the drug war and put even more people behind bars.
The Stop Importation and Trafficking of Synthetic Analogues (SITSA) Act is misguided legislation that would give Sessions’ Justice Department broad new powers to ban synthetic analogue drugs–and also medicinal plants like kratom that have been used for millennia. The bill also lets Sessions decide what the sentences should be, and takes away the requirement for Congressional oversight that has been in place for 40 years.
Congress is rushing to finalize this legislation as early as next week. If it passes, Sessions would have unchecked power to ban drugs and apply harsh penalties at his whim, with no oversight and no basis in health or science.
